Method 1: Easy Database-Only Backup (Do this first, but ALSO do method 2 below)
Although this method won't save your custom forms, reports, letters, or form packs, it saves the most important part of your installation- your data.
Step 1) Insert your external USB drive, if you plan on using one. Take note of the Drive letter if anything pops up to inform you it was inserted.
Step 2) From the home screen of Dealer Solutions, click on BACKUP.... under the GETTING STARTED menu, or click on TOOLS > BACKUP DATABASE from the top menu.
Step 3) If you are backing up to a USB thumb drive, select backup Option #1, see if you can find the correct drive in the list and move on to Step 5. If it is not in the list, or if you need to store it to a custom location, Select #2, BACKUP TO OTHER LOCATION
Step 4) Click the Folder button to the right of the white text box and navigate to your USB Thumb Drive, External Hard Drive, or even better, Offsite backup service such as OneDrive or Dropbox.
Step 5) Click the BACKUP NOW button at the bottom of the window.
If you saved the backup to an internet backup service such as OneDrive or Dropbox, be sure to leave the computer running for up to an hour or two (depending on size of the file and speed of your connection) to ensure it uploads completely.
Method 2: Complete Backup (Preferable)
Step 1) In Dealer Solutions, click on HELP on the menu across the top of the window, or the big, yellow HELP button in the upper right corner of the window
Step 2) Click on OPEN DEALER SOLUTIONS FOLDER from the menu
Step 3) In the File Explorer window that opens, single click on any file, then press CTRL+A to select all files, then press CTRL-C to copy the files to the clipboard. Alternatively, you may right-click on any of the highlighted files and select COPY from the pop-up menu
Step 4) Now Navigate to your USB Drive, or if you use a file backup service such as Dropbox, navigate to your Dropbox folder
Step 5) Create a new folder by either clicking the NEW / CREATE FOLDER icon from the toolbar at the top of the explorer window, or right-click in the white space to get a pop-up menu and choose NEW > FOLDER. Name the Folder "Dealer Solutions Backup" or something similar
Step 6) Right-click on your newly created folder and hit Paste
CAUTION: IF YOU USE DROPBOX OR ANOTHER BACKUP SERVICE, BE AWARE THAT IT COULD TAKE A VERY LONG TIME TO SYNCRONIZE ALL OF YOUR FILES! PERHAPS DAYS, DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF THE BACKUP. BE SURE TO LEAVE YOUR COMPUTER ON AND RUNNING (I.E. NOT SLEEPING) WHILE IT UPLOADS. YOU MAY ALSO WANT TO ADDITIONALLY MAKE A BACKUP TO USB THUMB/HARD DRIVE IN CASE IT DOESN'T FINISH UPLOADING IN TIME.
